Project Summary
UL Group recently accomplished a major milestone in industrial communication by enabling seamless data exchange between a Siemens PLC (PROFIBUS Controller) and a legacy Serial Display (RS-485), with the help of the Anybus ABC3000-A gateway.
This achievement demonstrates how modern gateways can unlock new levels of connectivity in brownfield environments, without the need for major hardware upgrades or custom coding.
-
Integration Objective
To allow real-time process data from the PLC to be displayed on a legacy RS-485 serial display, ensuring operators on the floor get immediate visibility into critical parameters.
-
System Architecture
PLC – Operating as the PROFIBUS-DP Master
Anybus ABC3000-A – Configured as a PROFIBUS-DP Slave and Serial Master
Serial Display – Communicating via RS-485 ASCII protocol
The Anybus device served as a protocol bridge, translating data from PROFIBUS to serial with minimal configuration and zero custom code.
Key Outcomes
Real-time process data displayed at the operator level
Improved plant floor visibility with no additional programming
Connected legacy RS-485 systems to modern PROFIBUS networks
Avoided expensive retrofitting or control system overhaul
Maintained industrial reliability and speed across protocols

Why This Matters
In industries like manufacturing, sugar, and process automation, legacy devices are still in widespread use. This project proves how protocol converters like the Anybus ABC3000-A can extend the value of existing equipment — helping companies modernize incrementally, affordably, and efficiently.
